When things go wrong...

We can advise you on compliance and insurance matters. Expert guidance when things go wrong is critical to a rapid return to business as usual. I've been on both sides of the table and I know what questions get asked and how to deal with them properly.

When you're doing something new

Assistance

When you're doing something new...

We can help you with risk assessment and alternative means of compliance, encouraging innovation while managing regulatory requirements. Novel projects benefit from understanding where the boundaries actually are.

Fast Craft Operations

My expertise extends beyond big ships

Fleet Management

I've managed patrol boat fleets, achieving 98% reliability and availability with a 30% reduction in OPEX. I've consulted on hydrofoil and fast cat passenger operations, commissioning craft, training crews and setting up commercial routes.

Novel Projects

I've advised on a wide range of special fast craft projects, including the world's first hydrogen powered passenger ferry and solar powered craft. My target market is the emerging novel commercial fast craft sector.

High Hazard Operations

Tuition, risk assessment and advice for government and NGOs operating fast craft in high hazard conditions. My experience in rigid inflatables began in the 1980s, driving 5.5 metre Seariders in any weather conditions deployed from lighthouse tenders in the northern North Sea. Part of my 25 year career with HM Coastguard was spent teaching patrol boat, interdiction and rescue skills in fast RIBS to Coastguard Officers and external clients including fire and rescue services, the police, and overseas counter terrorist units. I'm an RYA Advanced Powerboat instructor, with a commercial endorsement

Background

I am an independent marine consultant with 50 years of experience in the shipping industry, 25 of which have been in senior leadership roles. I specialise in supporting clients when things have gone wrong, when they're dealing with something unusual, or when they need independent assurance that a hazardous activity is properly controlled.

I am a Master Mariner, a RYA Advanced Powerboat instructor with commercial endorsement, and an auditor, investigator and assessor.

Who I Work With

I typically advise marine insurers, shipping law firms, and ship owners - especially on novel and special projects where compliance is challenging and risk requires careful calibration.

I develop training and assurance frameworks for high hazard fast boat work, principally for NGOs and government bodies, but also for film and TV work.

I bring clear judgement, independence and practical insight to complex marine matters, helping clients manage risk, resolve incidents and protect commercial and reputational interests.
